For more detailed information on hip surgery for a labral tear see this medical link. List of Hip Arthroscopy doctors by State at bottom of page.
Baseball's highest paid slugger had surgery for his labral tear and hip pain. A week later, Kurt Warner of the Arizona Cardinals underwent hip arthroscopy. The latest high profile athlete is Carlos Delgado. Are athletes becoming more vulnerable to hip problems? or are we just getting more sophisticated at detecting and treating them?
A torn hip labrum can be painful for anyone, but a baseball player, particularly one who pivots and twists a lot in the hips, might have a difficult time tolerating it very long. Labral tears do not have a lot of bloodflow and oxygen and can get very bothersome.
Maybe they'll consider injection Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP into his hip and having him sleep in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. Hip arthroscopy, ie arthroscopic hip surgery, is the usual way we treat these tears. They are difficult to heal with conventional treatments like medications, physical therapy, exericises or shots.
